Ten Tips To Slow Down The Aging Process

TrafficSwarm member since December 2011

Aging is a natural process but the effects of aging on your body and mind depend on your lifestyle choices. Taking care of your body inside and out ensures your health in both appearance and attitude. Here are some tips on how a healthy diet, regular exercise and relaxation can slow down the aging process.

To slow down the aging process, you will want to make a conscious effort to consume fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants like blueberries, walnuts, beans, red apples and artichoke hearts. Any plant based foods with bright colored skin contain antioxidants, which help in repairing damaged cells, slowing down the aging process.  Another really great benefit from Antioxidants is they help prevent cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease and Parkinson's disease.  You can eat your way to health or sickness.

10 tips on how to help slow down the aging process:

1. Eliminate unnecessary sugars from your diet. Empty calories lead to excess weight. And that means less energy. Drink more water, not soda pop. (See tip C)

2. Wipe out as many of the stress causing things in your life as possible. Research is already pointing to stress as a cause for wrinkles, not to mention a host of other ailments.  Slow down the aging process and relax your mind for emotional well-being. You could practice yoga and meditation. Deep breathing and meditation relieves stress, increases oxygen and blood circulation and improves energy levels.

3. Your skin can show the first signs of the aging process. Protect it and use an adequate amount of sunblock. Apparently most people don't use nearly enough. And, it is just as important to use it in the winter as in the summer. A lot of skin care moisturizers now contain sunblock. Look for one that includes it as an ingredient to protect your face.

4. Getting a good night's sleep is essential to slow down the aging process. It is more important than you could ever imagine. The body's maintenance is taking place as you dream good dreams. (See tip A)

5. Join a gym. It is the easiest way to exercise. You will meet people, get to use different equipment that you don't have at home, and feel good for the rest of the day.

6. Feeling down in the dumps? Researchers have found that the scent of cinnamon buns does an amazing job of lifting our spirits; However, instead of eating them, opt for the smell of cinnamon candles or air fresheners. During the Christmas season, I like to use cinnamon scented pine cones for decorations. It not only looks nice, but the cinnamon aroma fills the air and lifts your spirits during the Holidays.

7. Do something you enjoy. For me, I enjoy playing with my yorkie dog. She is only three pounds, but makes me laugh so much. She loves to play hide and seek with me. It's hilarious to watch her run up and down the hall looking for me as I'm hiding behind a door. Research proves that dogs, or any household animal, are shown to lift our spirits and create positive energy. They keep us active as well; which slows the aging process in itself!

8. Increase your fruits and veggies to between 4 and 5 servings a day. Not only are they good for you and your waistline it’s been proven that they also reduce your chances of getting some forms of cancer. (See tip B)

9. Learn to laugh. It's as simple as that! Again, animals make us laugh and create happiness in our lives.  Your laughter will create positive energy which will release feel good endorphins.  Endorphins have many positive effects on the body and mind.  Endorphins boost the immune system, slow down the aging process, and reduce pain and anxiety.

10. Learn to do absolutely nothing or sit quietly and observe.  It's very peaceful, relaxing and is actually quite healthy. When my oldest daughter was around 2 or 3 years old, I used to take her to the mall just to sit and watch people. Of course we would always get a Mrs. Fields cookie too! Just one cookie though, not a whole box of them, and we didn't do this every day either.  lol  She recently told me whenever she went to the mall she would feel that she "had to get a cookie from Mrs. Fields" and didn't know why.  She said it made her feel good to get that cookie and just sit & watch people running around the mall.  After I told her what we used to do, she told me that it made sense now and why she felt this way.   She said I started a little legacy, as she is planning on doing the same thing with her own children. ;)

Additional Tips On How To Slow Down the Aging Process

A. Never go to bed feeling hungry. You aren't doing yourself any favors by fasting before bed.  Have a light snack about an hour before bedtime. A cup of yogurt with granola is a great snack before bed.  It contains live cultures to help your  digestive system while you are sleeping.  Yogurt also helps women with yeast infections as it kills the yeast bacteria.  A banana has been shown to help you sleep.   Bananas contain melatonin and serotonin, chemicals known to help you sleep. Try it!  You need uninterrupted sleep if at all possible for your body to repair itself.  I’ve noticed if I don’t eat a light snack, I may wake up during the night feeling hungry and that prevents me from a good nights sleep.

B. When eating fruits and veggies, stick with bright colors like a rainbow! Anything colorful is filled with antioxidants that help repair cells and build new ones.  Squash, pineapple, cauliflower, pumpkin, oranges, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, green and red peppers, grapes, blueberry’s, cranberry’s, and apple’s, etc.

C. Drink plenty of water every single day. Water is needed for all metabolic activity in your body. It necessary at the cellular level for all cellular functions of the body. Water is your body's most important nutrient. It’s involved in every bodily function, and makes up 70- 75% of your total body weight. Water helps you to maintain body temperature, metabolize body fat, aids in digestion, lubricates and cushions organs, transports nutrients, and flushes toxins from your body. One of the liver's primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into energy. The kidneys are responsible for filtering toxins, wastes, ingested water, and salts out of the bloodstream. If you are dehydrated, the kidneys cannot function properly, and the liver must work overtime to compensate. As a result, it metabolizes less fat. So remember, if you are trying to decrease the amount of fat on your body, drink plenty of water.
